Starting Again- Its like I've forgotten how to ride.

Hi ladies. I bought a Giant Sedona a few years back for fitness and wt loss purposes. I rode tons back then and lost a lot of wt but stopped riding. I decided to start back up again and have completely forgotten what the gears are for, what they should be set at for a ride on a concrete trail around our lake, etc. Any resources someone can suggest to me to "relearn" how to ride? Thanks.

Hey Chrissy,

I know, what is a guy from Tucson doing on the Giant for Women site?  Well, I’ve been in the industry and riding for a long time and I love it when people ride bikes. . . . it’s the biggest and best part of my job!
To your question. . . there are any number of books that could re-explain the thought process behind choosing gears and what-not.  Most you could find at your LBS (preferably a Giant dealer smile. . . Leonard Zinn has a book, there are many titles.  If those venues don’t work some of the big book stores have a “bicycling for dummies” book I believe. I think that it is easier maybe to just do what feels right! Try not to pedal with too low of a cadence. . . 80 or above (pedaling rpm)is usually good. Ususlly this is having your bike in the middle or big chainring (3 gears up front)and then pretty much where ever you want it through the gears on the rear wheel. The most important thing is to ride and have fun. . . that is what makes it all worth while.  Please let me know if you have any other questions or if there is anything else I can do to help!
