Looking for a Bike

I am really interested in getting involved in cycling, but I am a college student on a really tight budget. I really like the FCR 3W but I just don't think I can afford a new one right now. I would like to know where I can go to look for used women's giant bikes. I am looking for a bike that I can use mostly for fitness on bike paths. I would like to maybe do a small triathalon after I train for a while, but riding with traffic scares me a bit. Any suggestions about looking for a good used women's bike that would fit my needs?

Hi Jen--

Depending on where you live, there may be a bike swap meet or community bike shop, which could be a good place to find a reliable bike for a lower cost.  Even the usual online boards and auctions may have decent bikes for less.

Unfortunately, you won’t have the security of a warranty in case of defects or unusual damage.  For that reason be super careful when buying used bikes-- you won’t necessarily know on sight whether a bike has been damaged to the point of being unsafe.

Maybe some of our more mechanical-oriented ladies could weigh in on how to purchase a good used bike and things to look for?

If I were looking for a nice used road type bike, I would check in your local bike club newsletters. A nice used ladies bike will be hard to find. You MUST find the right size and you shouldn’t put anymore money into it after the purchase. Just air the tires and ride. If you start putting money into it then you might as well have bought the new bike. To get a nice roadbike serviced by a good shop will cost you close to $100.00, if not more. If you cannot afford a new bike right now, I think Giant dealers everyonce in a while run financing specials, no interest-no payment for six months to a year.

Jen,

I believe bikes are very much affected by their riders and that they have a spirit to them.  I do not recommend a used bike; although, I do not want to discourage you.
I recommend praying about this cycling interest you have because God might guide you to finding the money you need to buy the bike you should have.  My website is http://www.agiantheart.net.

Cheerfully,
Sallie
