Ergo bar for Giant OCR 1?
I am a new cyclist and was lucky to have a well taken care of 2003 Giant OCR1 given to me. I am currently dealing with hand numbness on my left side. I have had multiple fittings, each time has gotten better - but now we are basically out of adjustments. My coach and the guys who have done my fittings are of the opinion that I need to upgrade my handlebars to a ergo or compact bar to give me a better "flat" surface in more locations for my hands. The problem is the stem on the bike. Ergo/compact bars won't work with it. It is a "Giant Adjustable alloy" stem. Has anyone made this switch? What did you do?

Chandra,
I recommend prayer for all decision making. Your coach and the bike shop men might be right. However, numbness on your left side might be a more serious problem than bike shop fitters can fix. The right decision might be to go into your bike shop and try a variety of handlebars on the models available. Change the stem too if necessary for new handlebars. Do not be afraid to speak directly with the bike mechanic at the shop about your cycling concerns.
Cheerfully,

This answer is a few months late! I had significant numbness in both hands. I tried two things: first, i bought braces for carpal tunnel. Second, someone told me i wasn’t in shape for the kind of bike i was riding, that my back was too stiff...and so i pulled the handlebars up, and then slowly lowered them as I got into better back shape. I bought a great spinervals dvd...something like tough love that went on for three hours, and i could only do about 20 minutes to start! that helped with being in shape on the bike, and then i did back stretching exercises.
You may be in significantly better shape than me! but if you’re like me, you might want to have someone evaluate you on the bike, instead of the bike…
Thanks for sharing this information. What is your current wellness status now and are you happy still with your bike? Do you have the same bike now?
