Another bike-suggestion wanted

I've never posted here before, but here goes ! I've been riding my faithful Cypress DX for 3 yrs, and it's been fine, I found out that I really do love cycling -- it had been many years ! -- and now I know I definitely want a bike to ride faster, lighter, longer, more nimble, not the granny-upright position, either! But I don't have thousands of dollars to spend! I like to do rides of 15-50 miles, would do that more often than weekly and plan to go longer rides - like Bike AcrossKansas, down the CA coast, etc not racing, just for the hours and hours of fitness/pleasure on the open road.

I'd love to get your suggestions for a road bike that's "enough" for me, without breaking the bank or, for that matter, without the high-end features/components that really are beyond my level of expertise and, therefore, need.

Lenore,

I am happy for you that you are enjoying cycling.  While I definitely am no expert on finance, I think you are being modest about your ability, and most of us would love to save money.  No one knows what is best for you better than God.  For the long rides you are writing about you could consider the Dash, Avail, or TCR.  I have a TCR, but I have mountain bike bars on it for safety and fitness.  This is a similar set-up as the Dash.  However, some like the drop handbars (TCR and Avail) and aerobars (Aeryn).  The Avail is considered the choice for endurance of which you are writing.  However, I am taking my TCR for longer rides now.  God knows where you can find the money if you decide to go with the higher end bikes.  The TCR, Avail, and Dash have several level from which to choose according to your finances and intended use.

Cheerfully,

Lenore,

Wow! That’s great that you want to get out there and do some longer rides. You must have some good base miles in your legs! It sounds like you’ll mainly be riding on the road and Giant has some great bikes that won’t break the bank.

Now while I agree with Sallie that either the Dash O for $1,350, the Avail 1 for $1,350, or maybe even the Avail Alliance for $1,525 sound like good bikes at a good price for you I do disagree that only God knows what’s best for you. I’m thinking that YOU know what’s best for you. wink

So the next step is figuring exactly how much you want to spend on the bike and then going to your local bike shop and taking a few for a test ride. Make sure that you’re not in the “granny upright position” and that you’re comfortable!

Good luck with everything and have FUN!!
Tara
