How to Organize a Riding Group

When I received my new Giant bicycle two years ago, I knew that for me to meet my personal health goals using the bike I would need support, so I called a neighbor who had a bike rusting away in her garage and from there our riding group grew. We initially could barely ride two miles before we had to stop for our morning coffee, but two years later we are still riding four times per week and we now ride more than fifteen miles per day.

There are many advantages to organizing your own cycling group. Not only will you get to pick the group’s pace and routes, but you’ll also meet new people who ride at your level, which will expand your pool of riding partners. Plus, you’ll be more motivated to ride yourself if you know there are other cyclists waiting to ride with you.

There are several things you need to think about before you organize your first group ride. What type of riding will you be doing, will it be on the road or on the trail? You’ll want to carefully consider the choice of days and the timing of the rides to be convenient not only for yourself, but also for the type of cyclists you would like to ride with. Seasons change and so does the weather, so be sure your group knows what type of weather conditions will postpone or cancel a ride.

You’ll need to consider the pace and distance of the rides you’ll be planning as well as the terrain. Will your rides be mostly on the flat, include rolling hills or be off-road? Will you include a stop for refreshments in the middle or at the end of the ride? These are some of the important things potential members will need to know.

When you select a starting point for your rides consider locations that are easy to get to and have ample parking. A restroom for changing or potty breaks is also a plus. The members of my group all cycle to the starting point, so we picked a spot that is pretty central to all of us.

Your local bike shop is a great resource for maps of bike routes in your area. Be sure to pre-ride or at least pre-drive the routes before the group rides so you know the road conditions as well as the mileage and best locations for restroom, lunch or coffee shop stops. Your bike shop can also be a great place to recruit new riders for your group, so ask if you can post a flyer outlining the details of your rides.

The ladies in my cycling group have not only motivated me to continue cycling, but they’ve also become my closest friends. Together we have all improved our health, gotten stronger, lost weight and soon we’ll be leaving our bikes at home and traveling together on our second ladies cruise!

Regards,
Diane

Avatar It is official. The wheels have been set into motion to begin the Allegheny Valley Cycling Group. Yesterday, despite there being 8" of snow on the ground, I took an announcment of the group to our local bike shop. Ken, the owner, gladly posted it and said, "People ask about this kind of stuff all the time. I'm glad some one finally took the initiative to do it !!" That's encouraging. I have also made a page within my website promoting the group. Link to it at -

I am stoked !! Only 8 weeks until the first scheduled ride. I'll keep you posted on the group's progress.
Avatar I just checked out your website and I'm jealous! I wish I lived there so I could ride with you on that beautiful trail. Have fun and keep us posted about your group! Diane
Avatar I don't know if you only found the AVCG page or my homepage, but if you'd like to become more envious, point your browser finger hickey thingy to

http://www.themanfromvan.com

That site showcases the over 60 miles of trail near my home. I'm pretty darn proud of what we have here and try to promote it through my site.
Avatar Dave, What a beautiful place to ride! The lakes I ride around are man man and beautiful too, but nothing like yours! Only advantage we have here is we can mostly ride year round. Maybe I'll make it east someday! Take care and keep us posted on how you like your new bike! Diane
Avatar Oops !! I guess that wasn't too cool for you to see the photo of the new bike. Well, that was my preference. The weather hasn't co-operated too well and I've only ridden 86 miles since March 25th. So far - so good !!

I want so badly to support my LBS, which sells Giant. Even though I didn't find a Giant bike that I felt served my needs, I am seriously considering a Cypress for my oldest daughter, age 11. She only learned to ride a two wheeler last year, although I knew she had it in her the whole time. You see, while being carried by her mother, we biked over 1000 miles the summer of 1995. So she should be a natural !!

I made the mistake of buying her a "department store" bike last summer. Not a good experience. You get what you pay for !!! I need to save another $75 to get her a Giant Cypress, so we're in the homestretch !! I'll keep you posted on that progress. Thanks !!! - Dave
Avatar Well, the first ride of the AVCG was a bust. No takers. Rather than give you a lengthy explanation, you can read my blog at - http://themanfromvan.tripod.com/blog/

I make posts to this blog weekly. I always try to make them cycling related.

I will not be discouraged !! I ride schedules on every car with some type of bicycle carrying device on Sunday. I've had one contact from that. I'll just have to try and promote a little better.

Until next time - Dave
Avatar The second ride of the Allegheny Valley Cycling Group on May 20th fared a little better than the first. I had 4 companions on my journey. Read all about it in my blog at - http://themanfromvan.tripod.com/blog/

Questions and comments are appreciated. Later - Dave

Avatar Gee - I did not realize it had been so long since I had checked back on this thread. The last ride of the Allegheny Valley Cycling Group on July 29th attracted 15 riders ranging in age between 35 and 70 years old.

We rode a total of 22 miles that day on paved flat rail trails. If you go to http://www.themanfromvan.com then click on the Allegheny Valley Cycling Group link on the navigation bar, there is a group picture from that day.

I also invite you to read my cycling blog at
http://www.themanfromvan/blog

I have ridden 771 miles since March 25th, 2007. I'm shooting for 1500 miles before the snow flies.

Jbird - it sounds to me like you need to take your bike to a local bike shop to see if (a) what you have can be fitted to you - or (b) possibly trading it for a bike that fits your body and cycling needs. Riding an ill fitting bike is only going to hinder your exercise and enjoyment. Best of luck to you !!!
